Setting server passwords, RPC options, and plug-in timeouts

The Connection Settings tab enables you to perform these tasks:

  • Change application server passwords, which are required passwords used by BMC Remedy applications when they connect to the AR System server. Components that use application server passwords include BMC Remedy Mid Tier, plug-in servers, the DSO server, the Flashboards server, the Email Engine, and custom applications. Most application server passwords are initially set when you install BMC Remedy AR System, but you can change them at any time by using the Connection Settings tab.
If you change an application server password on a BMC Remedy AR System server, you must also make the change for the application that connects to that server. For more information, see the Configuring the Connection Settings page in the table below.
  • Set the RPC program number and port information for plug-in and DSO servers.
  • Configure timeout settings for the plug-in servers.

To set connection settings

  1. In a browser, open the BMC Remedy AR System Administration Console, and click System > General > Server Information.
  2. Click the Connection Settings tab.

AR System Administration: Server Information form — Connection Settings tab
(Click the image to expand it.)
  3. Edit the options on the tab as needed:

    Connection Settings tab fields

    Tab nameField nameDescription
Application Service PasswordSpecifies the password that the various application components such as Approval Server, Email Engine, and Flashboard Servers use to access the AR System Server. Asterisks in the field indicate that a password is defined. If you change this password on the AR System server, you must also change it for the Email Engine and Flashboards server if they are installed. To change the Application Service Password for the Email Engine, update the EmailDaemon.properties file (see EmailDaemon.properties file). To change the Application Service Password for the Flashboards server, update the server.conf file (see Resetting the Application Service password). When working with server groups, use the same DSO and Application Service password for all servers in the group.
Mid-Tier Administrator PasswordSpecifies the password used by the mid tier to access the AR System server. If you change this password on the AR System server, you must also change it in the Mid Tier Configuration Tool, which updates the config.properties file (see AR Server Settings parameters).  In the Mid Tier Configuration Tool, this password is called the Admin Password.

    Plug-In Server

Local PasswordSets a password for other BMC Remedy AR System servers to use when they connect to this server's plug-in server. If this option is specified, the plug-in server accepts connections only from AR System servers configured to use the same password. If you change this password, you must also change the appropriate plug-in server target password on any AR System servers that connect to this plug-in server. If this option is not specified, the plug-in server accepts connections from AR System servers not configured to use a plug-in server target password.
Plugin Default TimeoutSpecifies the number of seconds in which the plug-in server must respond to the AR System server before an error is returned.
Plugin Default PortSpecifies the default port for the plug-in server.
     Server Name

Specifies the name of the AR System server associated with the target plug-in server.

Note: In this tab's table, you enter target connection settings. The AR System server uses these settings to connect to other plug-in servers.

Port NumberSpecifies the name and port number for the target plug-in server.
PasswordSpecifies the password for the target plug-in server. The server name and port number create a unique entry. If you modify a server name or port number, the password is cleared. If you remove the password for a particular entry, you can specify a server name and port number with no password for that entry. The next time you display the table, the entry is not displayed. The edit masked option is not supported in tables on forms. Therefore, when you type a new password in the Password column, it is visible. Saved passwords are masked.
DSO ServerDSO Local PasswordSpecifies the password that a DSO server uses to access this AR System server. If you change DSO Server password, you must also change the target password for any DSO servers that connect to this AR System server. See Configuring BMC Remedy Distributed Server Option. When working with server groups, use the same DSO and Application Service password for all servers in the group.
DSO Local RPC Program NumberSpecifies a dedicated (private) RPC program number that a DSO server uses for all communication with the AR System server. If you leave this field blank, the fast and list queues process all distributed operations.
Target connection settings tablesSpecifies RPC program numbers, TCP/IP ports, and DSO passwords that a DSO server uses when accessing remote AR System servers. See Configuring BMC Remedy Distributed Server Option.
Remote WorkflowLocal PasswordSpecifies the password that another AR System server uses to access this server through workflow. If you change this password, you must also change the appropriate remote workflow target password on any server containing workflow that connects to this server.
     Server Name

Specifies the name of the remote server.

Note: In this tab's table, you enter target connection settings. The AR System server uses these settings to connect to other AR System servers when required by workflow.

PasswordSpecifies a password to use when this server accesses the specified remote server through workflow. This occurs when an active link contains an SQL or Process command against the remote server and is activated by a non administrator user. If the remote server specifies a workflow password, you must register that server and password, or you cannot access that server through workflow. The edit masked option is not supported in tables on forms. Therefore, when you type a new password in the Password column, it is visible. Saved passwords are masked.
  4. Click Apply.
  5. Restart the AR System server for the Connection Settings to take effect.

    Note

If your environment contains AR System servers earlier than release 5.1, set the minimum API version to 9 to ensure that secure servers cannot communicate with servers running previous BMC Remedy AR System versions. For information about setting the API version, see Setting administrative options.

With regards to Mid-Tier Administrator Password description. It contains incorrect link to the BMC Remedy Mid Tier configuration, Configuring the Change Password page. I do not mean the incorrect version (the link is leading to 18.05 page), but totally incorrect page. Current link leads to the page which describes quite different Password! It should lead to https://docs.bmc.com/docs/ars1808/ar-server-settings-parameters-820495857.html, which describes the corresponding Password configuration.
