Adding a field to a view overlay

This topic provides two methods for adding a field to a view overlay:

Depending on the property that you choose to modify, BMC Remedy Developer Studio prompts for the following confirmations:

  • If the form is not an overlay, a message prompts you to confirm whether to create a form overlay. When you confirm, Developer Studio creates the form overlay and also creates the field overlay or view overlay, or both, based on the requirement for the selected property.
  • If the form is an overlay form, a message prompts you to confirm whether to create the field overlay, view overlay, or both. After your confirmation, Developer Studio creates the required overlays for the field property.
  • If the property to be modified is a display property of a view, then you must create only a view overlay.
  • If the property to be modified belongs to a field, create a view overlay and add the field to the view overlay.

Fields such as table, enum, and menu require that you perform additional steps before you can customize their display properties. For instructions, see Customizing table, enum, and menu display.

To add a field to a view overlay by using the context-menu on the form

If the field is part of the view, add the field to the view overlay by using the field's context-menu on the form.

  1. Open Developer Studio in Best Practice Customization mode.
For more information on the modes in Developer Studio, see Changing the development mode.
  2. Open the form containing the field that you want to add to the view overlay.
  3. Right-click the field that you want to add to the view overlay.
  4. In the context-menu that appears, click Add Field to View Overlay.

    Note

If the field is not part of a view overlay, the Add Field to View Overlay menu item is disabled.

To add a field to view overlay by using the context-menu in the Outline view

If the field is not part of the view, add it to the view overlay by using the field's context-menu in the Outline view.

  1. Open Developer Studio in Best Practice Customization mode.
For more information, see Changing the development mode.
  2. Open the form containing the field that you want to add to a view overlay.
  3. Open the Outline view of the form.
  4. Right-click the field that you want to add to the view overlay.
  5. In the context-menu that appears, click Add Field to View Overlay.
  6. Choose one of the following options that are displayed on the screen:
    • Add to view overlay of current view only — Adds the field only to the overlay of current view. If the current view does not have an overlay, Developer Studio creates a view overlay of the current view and then adds the field to the view overlay.
    • Add to view overlay of all views containing this field — Adds the field to view overlay of all the views that have the selected field. If the views do not have an overlay, Developer Studio creates a view overlay of each view and adds the field to the multiple views.
  7. Select the appropriate option and click OK.
Developer Studio takes one of the following actions based on your selection:
    • If the form overlay does not exist and you choose to add a field to view the overlay, Developer Studio prompts you to create an overlay of the form and also the view that the field exists in. Click OK to overlay the form and the view. You can choose to add the field to current or multiple views.
    • If the form overlay exists but view overlay does not exist, Developer Studio prompts you for approval to perform the necessary steps. After you click OK, Developer Studio creates the view overlay and adds the field to the view overlay.
    • If the selected field exists on multiple views of the form, Developer Studio prompts you for approval (see following figure) to add the field to the current view only or to all views that contain the field.

      Add field to multiple views

  8. After you have added the field to the view overlay, click File > Save to save the changes.
You can now change the form layout and the field's display properties.

    Note

You cannot undo the creation of the form overlay, but you can undo the creation of field and view overlays.

To add fields that are not associated with a view, click Show Fields Not in Any View in the Outline tab.
