BMC AMI Storage definition members

The following table describes each BMC AMI Storage definition member. BMC AMI Storage reserves the first six characters of each member name; you specify the last two characters.

BMC AMI Storage definition members

Member name

Global definition member?

Description

SMMSYSxx

No

  • Contains all global process options that apply to the overall functionality of BMC AMI Storage
  • Specifies default device type information, message control information, passwords, and SMF IDs
  • During startup, is read before other configuration members
  • Specifies the other definition members (see Defining-the-BMC-AMI-Storage-system) to include in the BMC AMI Storage configuration that is being started

SMCALSxx

Yes

Defines nonworking days (weekends, public holidays, company-specific holidays, and so on) to assist in DFSMShsm migration

SMCRITxx

Yes

Enables you to identify a list of critical data sets in your environment that should never be placed on the same volume as any other data set in the list

SMDBASxx

Yes

Contains a list of data sets that make up the space collector, HSM collector, and capacity planning databases

This member is populated during BMC AMI Storage customization. The HSMLOGDB, SPDB, and CAPDB views update the member with any manipulations performed with line commands.

SMDIAGxx

Yes

Specifies various diagnostic options such as tracing of filter and rule list processing or other debugging options that BMC Customer Support might request

SMEVNTxx

Yes

Defines how storage event notices are managed in the automation component

Event member parameters include mode, destination, severity, and so on.

SMFLSTxx

No

Selects the resources on which a BMC AMI Storage function operates

Resources can be selected by data set name, volume name, unit name, data set type, job name, account number, or various other characteristics. For example, all data sets with names that begin with GL225 or all jobs with a name that ends with TST may be selected. A powerful name-masking facility allows flexibility in identifying the resources to select.

SMFUNCxx

Yes

Activates BMC AMI Storage functions and controls message and tracing activity

BMC AMI Storage space management services are divided into functions. Functions provide all runtime services of BMC AMI Storage. SMFUNCxx points to members SMFLSTxx and SMRLSTxx, which select resources and control the operation of the functions. With the exception of the USERVARS function, functions and their filter lists and rule lists are specific to individual components.

SMPOOLxx

Yes

Defines pools of DASD volumes and pools of tape devices

SMPOLIxx

No

Defines pool policy definitions

SMRLSTxx

No

Defines rules that control the action of the BMC AMI Storage function on the selected resources

Rule parameters enable you to modify properties such as block size, pool name, and data class. They also enable you to further identify affected resources based on data set name, volume name, job name, data set size, and so on.

SMSCHDxx

No

Defines scheduled tasks

SMSPOLxx

Yes

Defines subpools of SMS-managed DASD volumes

SMS subpools are used only by the Allocation component.

SMVARSxx

Yes

Defines BMC AMI Storage variables and assigns values to those variables

BMC AMI Storage variables can be substituted for BMC AMI Storage parameter values.

The following figure shows how the member parameters interconnect to configure a typical system.
