Reducing space for tracked data sets

You can specify allocation reductions based on a variety of metrics.

For example, you can specify a reduction for specific days of the week or month, or for data sets that have a specified amount or percentage of free space. See the SPACAQTY RLST parameters section for more information.

To reduce space for a tracked data set

  1. Open the SPACAQTY RLST member.
  2. For the data set that needs the reduction, specify the space reduction amount in any of the following ways:

    • Number of tracks or cylinders
    • Percentage of the last allocation
    • Percentage of free space in the last allocation
    Warning

    Important

If you specify space reduction for a data set that has not yet been tracked through an entire life cycle, the reduction will take effect for subsequent allocations.

The DSA facility will notice when the allocation size changes for a data set, usually through a change to the JCL creating the data set. If the allocation size is different from the last allocation of the data set, DSA will not consider the allocation for space reduction.
