REDUCEXT parameters used with Allocation

REDUCEXT accepts the following parameters to maximize flexibility.

REDUCEXT parameters

Parameter

Usage

VL

Indicates the volumes to be included for processing

An asterisk (*) can be used for pattern masking. An asterisk indicates that any characters after the asterisk can be ignored.

SG

Indicates the storage groups to be included for processing

If neither VL nor SG is coded, the default is to process all volumes.

NX

Indicates the number of extents that are used before a data set is a candidate for reorganization

The default is 16 (the number of extents that z/OS allows per volume), which indicates that the data set is multivolume. If reorganization is desired based on fewer extents, you can specify a smaller number. Any number over 16 is not accepted. Numbers 1 through 9 should be prefixed with zero. Any non-VSAM data set with 16 or more extents is eligible for extent reduction, regardless of whether BMC AMI Storage was responsible for the added volume.

WK

Indicates the name of a work volume (for non-SMS- managed data sets)

This volume may also be used for SMS-managed volumes, but is not required.

SIM

Displays the DFDSS control cards that are generated

No actions are executed. This parameter can be used prior to actual execution to determine which data sets will be processed.

NORUN

Indicates for DFDSS to be called in NORUN mode

This parameter can be used prior to actual execution to determine which data sets will be processed.

ONEWAY

Specifies that non-SMS data sets will not be copied back to the originating volume but will reside on the volume that is specified on the WK parameter

SYS1

Allows processing of SYS1 data sets

If this parameter is not specified, SYS1 data sets are ignored (which is the default).

Warning

Important

The REDUCEXT program was originally published in Issue 70 (July 1992) of Xephon’s MVS Update, a monthly journal for z/OS technicians, and is used with Xephon’s permission.
