Information

SPACE RLSE subparameter processing

When RLSE is specified in the JCL SPACE parameter, the system releases unused space in the data set.

However, Data Set Size Assist notes what the allocation size was before space was released. This measurement is referred to as allocation high-water mark (HWM). Even if the data set continues to grow and further RLSEs are performed, Data Set Size Assist continually adjusts the HWM value accordingly. Therefore, Data Set Size Assist knows what the free space was in a data set, even if the VTOC indicates there is none due to RLSE.
