Using substring variables
A variable without an intervening blank or slash (/) can be followed directly by one or two parameters, separated by colons.
These parameters must be constants. The first parameter indicates the beginning location in the contents of the variable, while the second parameter designates the length of the substring. If the length of the substring exceeds the actual length of the contents of the variable, the variable will be truncated.
Example
&VOLSER:2:4
Variable example | Substitution example |
|---|---|
&VOLSER | Substitutes MYVOL1 for &VOLSER |
2 | Indicates the beginning location in the contents of the variable. (The second position of MYVOL1 is Y.) |
4 | Designates the length of the substring. (Starting with Y, four characters of MYVOL1 are YVOL.) |
