AUTOVOL function—Volume automation

The AUTOVOL function is used to initiate automation for a volume or pool of volumes.

Volume automation provides the capability to monitor volume space or other attributes and initiate actions when thresholds are exceeded. Unlike other BMC AMI Storage Automation functions, the AUTOVOL function is initiated through user request rather than during some other process or event. Actions include the following:

  • Submits a job by using a skeleton tailoring facility to perform a batch process on the volume or volumes

  • Issues events to communicate with BMC AMI Ops Automation, allowing all the actions available in BMC AMI Ops Automation to be initiated in response to a volume condition

In conjunction with events being issued, BMC AMI Ops Automation Rules can be used to initiate volume-level solutions for the selected volumes. These solutions can be initiated in a tiered approach, where automated solutions are applied to a volume in steps that are defined in multilevel processing, checking the volume utilization at the end of each step. For more information, see Multilevel automation (MLA) processing.

The AUTOVOL console command can be used to initiate volume automation on a list of individual volumes or on volumes in a pool (see AUTOVOL command). This console command can be issued by time-driven Rules in BMC AMI Ops Automation or through any mechanism that can issue console commands.
