Latest RHEL 6 operating system upgrade
CentOS 6 replaces Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 in BMC Discovery 11.2
The upgrade to BMC Discovery 11.2 replaces Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 with
CentOS 6
. CentOS is an enterprise-class Linux platform which is derived from, and aims to be functionally compatible with its upstream source,
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
(RHEL).
As CentOS is derived from, and aims to be functionally compatible with its upstream source, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, BMC performs the same testing against the Red Hat 6 STIGs.
When applying OS upgrades to BMC Discovery 11.2, ensure that you download and apply the Latest CentOS 6 operating system upgrade.
Latest RHEL 6 operating system upgrade
This OSU contains updates to fix the Ghostcat vulnerability (CVE-2020-1938). However, if you upgrade to any version of BMC Discovery, the upgrade will overwrite /usr/tideway/tomcat/conf/server.xml
with that included in the upgrade, effectively reverting the change made by this OSU. If you plan to upgrade in the near future, you should either:
- install the OSU, and then modify the server.xml files described below after the product upgrade
- postpone installing this or later OSUs until after the product upgrade
The change in the OSU updates the following files, /usr/tideway/tomcat/conf/server.xml
and /usr/local/tomcat/conf/server.xml
. The following line is updated:
'<Connector port="8009" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" />'
to:
'<Connector port="8009" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" address="127.0.0.1" />'
TKU and OSU release timing
To provide a more predictable release cadence for our customers, BMC will publish the latest TKU and OSU on the first Wednesday of the month.
The OS upgrade supports the installed BMC Discovery (64 bit architecture) virtual appliances on RHEL 6. The following file is available from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site for 64 bit architecture:
ADDM_OS_Upgrade_64_6.20.11.17_826538_ga.sh.gz
Packages which have been updated since the previous OS upgrade are listed below, with version numbers:
- java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless-1:1.8.0.275.b01-0.el6

I recently applied this OS upgrade after installing 11.0.2 from scratch. Should the release number at the bottom of the UI not be reflected after an update? I assumed it would go from 632444 to 637206, but it hasn't. I received a message that the upgrade completed successfully and the packages look like they've been updated. I even rebooted again to see if that'd make a different, but it didn't. Should I be concerned?
Hi Jeff,
The release number reflects the build of the BMC Discovery release, so it won't change with an OS upgrade.
You can tell which OS upgrade is applied using Help > About which displays an About BMC Discovery page. The About BMC Discovery page shows the version number and edition, the Devices file version (from TKU) and the OS update package installed.
You can also determine the OS update package from the command line by entering:
rpm -q tideway-appliance
I'll add this to the OSU documentation.
Hope this helps,
Duncan.
Thanks for the explanation Duncan. I really appreciate it!
You're welcome. New page here.
Duncan.
Hi Ducan,
Are there any instructions(commands) and troubleshooting documents available for OSU Updgrades?
Thanks,
Surya
