Making external data available in CMDB by using Federation Manager

You can define a data store to represent a source of external data. For example, a data store can represent data from databases (retrieval type) or cross-launch links. You can use Federation Manager to federate external data through a data store, making that data available to view and query with BMC Configuration Management Database (BMC CMDB) tools, such as the CMDB Explorer.

Depending on what kind of data you want to configure to be available in the BMC CMDB, you can use the following methods:

This task is performed in Federation Manager. See Making external data available to CMDB using by cross-launch links in the Federation Manager.

Access information about the external sources of data by using classes

To access this information, you must define a federated data class in the BMC CMDB data model that represent this information. The external sources of data include tables on a database.

This task is performed in Federation Manger in the Atrium Core Console.

This method of accessing external data sources includes the following major steps:

  1. Federating data stored externally by creating BMC CMDB classes.
  2. Creating or editing a federated relationship classes.
