This documentation supports the 19.08 version of BMC CMDB.

Creating and editing a dataset

A dataset in BMC CMDB is used to capture data from different data sources.

To create a dataset

  1. Open the Datasources page.
    Dashboard > Manage Datasources
  2. Click Add Dataset.
  3. Specify the following fields:

    Name

Type a unique name. The name cannot contain any characters that are not allowed in file names for the operating system of your server. For example, on a Windows server, your job name cannot contain the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |

    Dataset ID

Type a unique ID string for the dataset. The dataset ID cannot contain a slash (/) , semicolon (;) , or comma (,). If you do not provide an ID, the system generates a GUID to use for this ID. The name and dataset ID cannot be changed from this page after you have created the dataset.

    Accessibility

Select whether the instances can be created, modified, and deleted in the dataset.

    • Writable — Any process can write to the dataset.
    • Read Only — No process can write to the dataset. Data can only be viewed.
Dataset TypeSelect the Regular or Overlay radio buttons.
For information about overlay datasets, see Overlay datasets.
    Source Dataset ID
(available only if you select Overlay in the Dataset Type list)
Specify the existing regular dataset upon which your new dataset will be overlaid.
PermissionsSelect the groups and roles which will have permissions to this dataset in the Groups and Roles list.
  4. Click Save.
The dataset appears in the Datasets list of the Datasources page.

To edit a dataset

Warning

Changing dataset properties can impact all jobs and processes that refer to the dataset. If you change a dataset property, you must update all references to the dataset with the new property. For example, if you change the dataset name, you must update all references to the dataset such as jobs with the new name.

You cannot edit dataset properties from the CMDB Portal except for the permissions. You must use the BMC Dataset Remedy AR System form to edit a dataset.

  1. Open the BMC.CORE.CONFIG:BMC_Dataset form.
    For example:
    http://<midTier:port>/arsys/forms/<ARServer/>BMC.CORE.CONFIG:BMC_Dataset
    http://vw-bsm-idd-midtier:8080/arsys/forms/idd-arserver/BMC.CORE.CONFIG:BMC_Dataset

The form opens in search mode.
  2. Enter search criteria to find the dataset you want to edit and click Search.
  3. Edit the properties and click Save.
