Viewing a Change Summary report

The Change Summary report displays all configuration changes made to a network span over a period of time. To determine who made the configuration change and device events received before and after the configuration change, select Show Events.

To generate a Change Summary report

  1. Open the Change Summary report page by navigating to Reports > Activity Reports > Change Summary.
  2. Enter the following information in the displayed fields:

    Field or link

    Description

    NEW IN 8.9.03Annotation

(Optional) Enter notes or a description to help you identify this report when it appears in a list among other reports.

NEW IN 8.9.03When Complete, Notify Via Email

(Optional) Click to request that the system send you a notification email when the report is complete and ready for you to view.

    Network Span

Select a network span for the report. Select one of the following options:

    • Entire Network: Include all devices you are allowed to access.
    • Realm: Select one of the defined realms.
    • Group: Select one of the defined realms, and then select a group.
    • Device: Select one of the defined realms, and then select a device.

    Filter Devices

(Optional) Click to open the Device Filter dialog box and select a specific device or set of devices.

    View Devices

(Optional) Click to view the devices in the selected network span after using the Filter Devices option.

    Time Period

Select the time range for the search; this selection matches against the configuration creation time.
If you select After, Before, or Range, additional controls appear that you can use to select the appropriate dates and times.

    Configuration

Select which configuration to include in the report (Running, Startup, or any other supported configuration).

    Change Type

(Optional) Enables you to show only internal, external, or all types of changes made to a device configuration in the report.

An internal change is one made using TrueSight Network Automation, for example, changes made by running a Deploy to Active job. An external change is one made outside of TrueSight Network Automation, for example, configuration changes made directly in a device, and those changes are detected by TrueSight Network Automation via a user-triggered snapshot or by running an Auto Archive job. If Internal or External is chosen, the configuration in the Changed To column of the report is the internal or external change, and the configuration in the Changed From column is the previous version.

The default option for this field is blank, which shows both internal and external changes made to the configuration.

    Originating User

(Optional) Enables you to filter the report to only show changes made by a specific user.

You can use the wild card (*) in this field. For example, entering sys* in this field results in a report made up of entries for all users that start with sys. Leaving this field blank or entering the wild card by itself results in all users being included in the report.

The list of users include all users defined for TrueSight Network Automation, and, in some instances, users outside of TrueSight Network Automation, such as users who log into devices controlled by TrueSight Network Automation, if TrueSight Network Automation is configured to receive syslog messages. For example, if a user makes a change directly on a device, a syslog message indicating the change is issued. When that syslog message is received by TrueSight Network Automation, the name of the user who made the change is captured.

In the report, the configuration in the Changed to column corresponds to the changes made by matching originating users, and the configuration in the Changed From column is the previous version.

    Show Events

(Optional) Select to display all received external events (such as syslog events) during the change timeframe.

  3. Click Next to begin the report generation and NEW IN 8.9.03to display its progress on the Report Activity page.

  4. Click Refresh until the report is completed, or wait until you receive the notification email. If the report is aborted, the Progress column indicates so, to alert you that the report data is partial. You can view the partial report, but be aware it is partial. You should refine your selections (if you asked for too-large a report) or re-generate the report (if it was aborted due to a system shutdown) in order to obtain a complete report. Then delete the aborted report as soon as possible. For more information about the Report Activity page, see Viewing report activity.
  5. Click the Change Summary link in the Report column to display the report.

Verify the report is complete. If the report was aborted, the title and the Report Generation information in the footer inform you so, and the footer informs you about the user who aborted it. An aborted report will be missing one or more devices and configuration changes.

The Change Summary report shows a summary of differences for all selected devices over the specified time period.
