VDC management in TrueSight Network Automation

Virtual data center (VDC) functionality in TrueSight Network Automation is enabled or disabled by a vdcEnabled entry in the global.properties file. This property is controlled by the Enable Virtual Data Center option during installation. See Performing the installation.

A VDC is typically owned by one particular BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management customer and can be thought of as an extension of the customer's existing network into the cloud.

It is also possible for multiple BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management customers to share a VDC when network isolation between customers is not a concern.

The cloud service provider owns and manages the network equipment underlying the VDCs.

A VDC contains one or more data networks whose traffic is isolated from other VDCs. For example, a VDC might contain one network dedicated to web traffic and another dedicated to database traffic. A VDC also contains a management network whose traffic can either be isolated from other VDCs or shared across VDCs, depending upon preference. Sharing a management network across VDCs conserves resources but is a security risk.

A given server network interface controller (NIC) is attached to a particular network within a VDC.

Isolation of networks in different VDCs is achieved by using VLANs to control layer 2 connectivity and routing to control layer 3 connectivity. Within a given VDC, networks are isolated from each other at layer 2; however, they typically are not isolated from each other at layer 3.
