Task 2 - Verifying operation of the data collectors on UNIX

You can confirm that the Collect programs are installed and working properly by testing that the console can communicate with Perform Agent, and by running a short data collection and viewing the result.

To test the connection to Agent

Run the following command from the console:

> $BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n <targetHostName> -q

The following example shows output verifying the connection to a system named clm-pun-015565:

[perform@clm-pun-032515 ~]$ $BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n clm-pun-015565 -q

To test the collector

The following command starts a short data collection request. Replace <nodeName> with the name of the system on which you want to run the collection request.

$BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n <nodeName> -e +15 -d /tmp -w 1

This command starts 15 minutes data collection on the target system.

The following example shows output verifying the initiation of short data collection request on the target system named clm-pun-015565:

[perform@clm-pun-032515 scripts]$
$BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n clm-pun-015565 -e +15 -d /tmp -w 1

best1collect: Collect process with instance noInstance will
be started on node clm-pun-015565. Specified data repository: /tmp.

*Node: clm-pun-015565 has acknowledged Start request
successfully.

To query the status

After the collector has been running for about 15 minutes, issue the following command to query the status of the request:

$BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n <nodeName> -Q

Check that data was being collected by referring to the Active Data field. In general, as long as the number of groups in Active Data status is greater than 0, the collector is operating normally.

For example, the following output is from the query for a system called clm-pun-015565.bmc.com:

[perform@clm-pun-032515 scripts]$
$BEST1_HOME/bgs/scripts/best1collect -n clm-pun-015565.bmc.com -Q
