Resource Pools page in the vSphere Infrastructure view
The Resource Pools page in the vSphere Infrastructure view provides views and reports for resource pools. Resource pools are units of resources that are allocated to business units. Use this page to monitor resource usage by resource pool.
The data displayed in the page provides a complete picture of resource pool memory and CPU usage and contention using specific metrics, and helps answer critical questions related to capacity and memory subsystems, such as:
- How much CPU is reserved for a particular resource pool?
- How many VMs in my resource pool are powered ON?
- How much memory is reserved for a particular resource pool?
To access the page, in the TrueSight console navigation pane, click Capacity Views > Virtualization > vSphere > Infrastructure, and in the vSphere Infrastructure page, click the Resource Pools tab.
The data in the page is categorized based on different subsystems and grouped under separate tabs. Click a tab to view the metrics for that subsystem:
Subsystem | Description |
---|---|
Capacity | Displays consolidated trend and saturation related metrics for two subsystems: CPU and Memory. Also, displays number of powered on VM information. |
Memory | Displays memory related metrics, including ballooning, granted and shared memory. |
Metrics per resource pool are displayed in a tabular format.
By default, some columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menuthat is located next to the table title.
This topic contains the following sections:
Capacity metrics
Capacity metrics are displayed in the Capacity page. The Capacity tab is displayed by default, each time you access the Resource Pools page.
Each row in the table represents a resource pool and displays the following metrics:

vCenter | Name of the vCenter on which the resource pool is configured. | Last value | Relationship VHC_CONTAINS_RP is used to get VIRTUALCENTER_NAME |
CPU Reserved [GHz] | Total CPU capacity reserved for the resource pool, measured in Gigahertz. | Last value | CPU_RESERVED_MHZ |
CPU Limit [GHz] | Total CPU clock speed limit assigned to the resource pool, measured in Gigahertz. It can either be a Gigahertz value or Unlimited. | Last value | CPU_LIMIT_MHZ |
CPU Used [GHz] | Total CPU capacity used by the resource pool, measured in Gigahertz. | 95th percentile | CPU_UTILMHZ |
CPU Trend [GHz] | Daily growth rate of CPU utilization of the resource pool, measured in Gigahertz/day. | Trend | Based on CPU_UTILMHZ |
Memory Reserved [GB] | Total memory reserved for the vSphere resource pool, measured in Gigabytes. | Last value | MEM_RESERVED |
Memory Limit [GB] | Total amount of memory limited and assigned to the vSphere resource pool, measured in Gigabytes. It can either be a Gigabyte value or Unlimited. | Last value | MEM_LIMIT |
Memory Used [GB] | Total amount of memory used by the resource pool, measured in Gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_CONSUMED |
Memory Trend [GB] | Daily growth rate of memory utilization of the resource pool per the current trend, measured in Gigabytes/day. | Trend | Based on CPU_CONSUMED |
Number of VMs | Total number of vSphere VMs configured on the resource pool. | Average | GM_NUM |
Powered ON VMs | Total number VMs that are currently powered ON in the resource pool. | Average | GM_ON_NUM |
Cluster/Host | Name of the cluster or host on which the resource pool is configured | Last value | CLUSTER_NAME |

Memory metrics
Memory metrics are displayed in the Memory page. Click the Memory tab to access the page.
Each row in the table represents a resource pool and its corresponding vCenter and displays the following metrics:
Column | Description | Statistical Type | Metrics |
---|---|---|---|
Resource Pool | Name of the resource pool. | Last value | NAME |
vCenter | Name of the vCenter on which the resource pool is configured. | Last value | Relationship VHC_CONTAINS_RP is used to get VIRTUALCENTER_NAME |
Data Center | Name of the data center on which the resource pool is configured. | Last value | Relationships VHC_CONTAINS_RP and DC_CONTAINS_VHC are used to get the NAME of the data center |
Cluster/Host | Name of the cluster or host on which the resource pool is configured. | Last value | CLUSTER_NAME/HOST_NAME |
Used [GB] | Total amount of memory used by the resource pool, measured in Gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_CONSUMED |
Balloon [GB] | The amount of guest physical memory that is currently reclaimed from the virtual machine, measured in Gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_BALLOONING |
Granted [GB] | The amount of machine memory that the VMkernel has given to the resource pool based on its memory demand, measured in Gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_GRANTED |
Shared [GB] | The amount of guest physical memory shared with other virtual machines through the VMkernel’s transparent page-sharing mechanism, measured in Gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_SHARED |
Overhead [GB] | An indicator of the amount of overhead incurred due to virtualization. It is the amount of memory used by the VMkernel to run the virtual machine, measured in gigabytes. | 95th percentile | MEM_OVERHEAD |

To view details for a specific vSphere resource pool
To view the details page for a particular vSphere resource pool, click its (hyper-linked) name under the Resource Pool column. You can use the sorting and filtering options on the page to find a specific resource pool.
For more information, see Sorting a table in the TrueSight console and Using filtering options in views in the TrueSight console.
The Resource Pool details page displays information under the following sections or panels:
Section or Panel | Description |
---|---|
Summary page | A quick graphical summary of the CPU and memory utilization of the resource pool. Core metrics for the selected entity are displayed as analysis charts, depending on available data. At the bottom of each chart is a link that takes you to the Data Explorer view for the specific resource type, and displays charts and information for a larger set of metrics. The data displayed in Data Explorer view charts for any resource part of this view category, is based on the time filter that is applied to the primary view in this tab. You can select Advanced time periods (other than default/basic) from the Data Explorer view for the selected resource, to view charts over a different time resolution. For more information, see Resource Pool page in the vSphere Data Explorer view. |
Configuration Details page | Configuration information about the resource pool. |
Parent Resource Pool Page | Details of the selected resource pool's parent resource pool. For more information, see Parent Resource Pool table |
Associated VMs page | All available recommendations for the cluster. For more information, see Recommendations page in the vSphere Infrastructure view. |
Tags panel | List of tags that are associated with the cluster. You can assign or remove tags by using the Edit Tags option from the Tags action menu. |
