Performing the Capacity Agent installation silently

A silent installation is one in which you run the installation program from a command line, enabling you to install the product in situations where the operating system of the target computer does not support a graphical user interface (UI). Choose the silent installation method if you want to:

  • Run the product installer in the background instead of running it interactively.
  • Install on a remote computer that cannot display a graphical UI.
  • Maintain consistent installation configuration parameter values across multiple computers.

You launch installation program from the command line and specify a preconfigured install configuration template file (config file) that contains details for all the parameters required to install the product. You can create a single config file and use it for multiple installations. The Agent installation program includes the system collectors and service daemon.

This topic includes sample configuration files for the Windows and UNIX/Linux installations. Use the values that you collected in your installation worksheets to update the configuration file.

Before you begin

To prepare the configuration file

  1. Create a folder in which to save the options file.
  2. In the product image directory, navigate to the silent subdirectory.
  3. Copy the file, AgentSilentInstallOptions.txt, to the folder you created.
  4. Open the file in a text editor and edit the options according to the parameters you defined in your worksheet:

Remember

For UNIX and Linux systems, ensure that the user name that you specify as a value for the BPA_USER parameter in the configuration file is created on the system where the agent is installed.

To install the Agent in silent mode

  1. Open a command prompt and change the working directory to the directory where the installation image is located.
  2. Enter one of the following commands, depending on your platform:
    • (Microsoft Windows)
      start /WAIT setup.exe -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE= "<driveName>:\<fileLocationPath>\AgentSilentInstallOptions.txt"
    • (UNIX and Linux)
      ./setup.sh -i silent -DOPTIONS_FILE= "<fileLocationPath>/AgentSilentInstallOptions.txt"

The variables <driveName> and <fileLocationPath> represent the location where you saved the response file, if different from the location of setup.exe. If the path contains spaces, enclose the path and response file name in quotation marks, as shown above.
