Datastores page in the vSphere Infrastructure view
A vSphere datastore is a logical container that holds the virtual machine files and other files necessary for virtual machine operations. The Datastores page in the vSphere Infrastructure view shows datastore capacity information to help implement datastore allocation policies, reports the total and available capacity, and helps you decide on the number of VMs that can be added to the datastore, based on the spare capacity available. The spare capacity calculations take into account thin and thick provisioned VMs.
To access the page, in the TrueSight console navigation pane, click Capacity Views > Virtualization > vSphere > Infrastructure, and in the vSphere Infrastructure page, click the Datastores tab.
This topic contains the following sections:
Metrics per datastore are displayed in a tabular format. By default, the table is sorted on the number of additional datastores that can be added to the cluster on the basis of their capacity.
By default, some columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menuthat is located next to the table title.
Each row corresponds to a datastore and provides an overview of its capacity with the help of the following metrics:
Name of the vSphere datastore.
|Cluster||Name of the vSphere cluster to which the datastore is associated.||Last value||NAME|
Name of the datastore cluster to which the datastore belongs.
|Data Center||Name of the data center on which the datastore resides.||Last value||NAME|
Name of the vSphere vCenter on which the datastore is configured.
Total storage capacity of the datastore, measured in Gigabytes.
Total storage capacity in use by the datastore, measured in Gigabytes.
The total amount of storage not in use by and available to the datastore, measured in Gigabytes.
|Computed using the 95th percentile value of Used capacity||DSTORE_FREE|
|Provisioned [GB]||Total storage capacity provisioned for the datastore, measured in Gigabytes.||MIN||DSTORE_PROVISIONED|
VMs on Board
Number of vSphere VMs hosted by the datastore
|MAX||Count of VMs connected to the datastore|
|Snapshot Size [GB]||Total size of all snapshots of this datastore, measured in Gigabytes.||MAX||SUM(VM.SNAPSHOT_SIZE)|
AVG VM Size [GB]
Average size of each vSphere VM hosted by the datastore, measured in Gigabytes.
|Computed metric, based on 95th percentile of storage utilization||avg_vm_size = DSTORE.dstore_provisioned / vms on board|
Additional VMs Hostable
Number of additional vSphere VMs that can be added to the datastore, based on the average size of existing VMs.
|Computed using Avg VM Size|
remaining_capacity = dstore_size - dstore_provisioned
avg_vm_size = DSTORE.dstore_provisioned / vms on board
Additional VM Hostable = remaining_capacity / avg_vm_size
To view details for a specific vSphere datastore
To view the details page for a specific vSphere datastore, click its (hyper-linked) name under the Datastore column. You can use the sorting and filtering options on the page to find a specific datastore cluster.
For more information, see Sorting a table in the TrueSight console and Using filtering options in views in the TrueSight console.
The Datastore details page displays information under the following sections or panels:
|Section or Panel||Description|
A quick graphical summary of the datastore space and capacity utilization, and read/write rate and latency details. At the bottom of the chart is a link that takes you to the corresponding Data Explorer view.
The data displayed in Data Explorer view charts is based on the time filter that is applied to the primary view in this tab. You can change the time period in the Data Explorer view for the selected resource, to view charts over a different time resolution.
For more information, see Datastore page in the vSphere Data Explorer view.
|Configuration Details page||Configuration information about the datastore.|
|Associated Systems page|
Name and system type details for all vSphere systems, such as clusters, hosts, VMs, that are associated with the selected datastore.
|Recommendations panel||All available recommendations for the datastore. For more information, see Recommendations page in the vSphere Infrastructure view.|
|Tags panel||List of tags that are associated with the cluster. You can assign or remove tags by using the Edit Tags option from the Tags action menu.|
