Capacity-Aware Placement Advice

The Capacity-Aware Placement Advice (CAPA) service in TrueSight Capacity Optimization provides real-time recommendations for placement of new workloads on your cloud when provisioning it with BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management. These recommendations are based on available and forecasted capacity.

The service ensures provisioning success by checking capacity availability of Virtual hosts and Virtual clusters. It also performs virtual compute pool placement, and optimizes data centers over many provisioning requests.

The CAPA service is supported with the VMware vSphere platform only.

This topic contains the following sections:

Understanding the CAPA service

Before you start using and managing the CAPA service in TrueSight Capacity Optimization, BMC urges you to read about how it works.

For a detailed discussion on CAPA internals, see Understanding the CAPA service.

Configuring BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management before using CAPA

Before you can start using the CAPA service, you need to configure BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to use it.

For detailed information on each pre-requisite task needed to accomplish this, see Configuring BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.x to enable CAPA.

After you configure BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to use CAPA

After you have configured the integration of BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to use CAPA in TrueSight Capacity Optimization, you may want to administer or verify this integration.

For detailed information on accomplishing this task, see Administering integration with BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to use CAPA.

Working with and using CAPA

After you have successfully verified the integration of TrueSight Capacity Optimization with BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to use the CAPA service, you can begin using it. The table below lists a series of tasks you can accomplish by using the CAPA service.

To do this

See

To set and manage overprovisioning for datastore elements

Overprovisioning of datastore elements is provided at the time of placement of a virtual disk, and must be defined as a percentage of the free space available on the target datastore. For more information, see:
