Troubleshooting out-of-the-box content installation errors while upgrading BSA

Various product objects are provided as out-of-box content to support common tasks and use cases. These objects are installed automatically by the unified product installer during upgrade. Use the information on this page to troubleshoot common errors that you might encounter while installing the content during the upgrade.

Error message displayed during upgrade

While running the unified product installer to upgrade to BMC Server Automation, you might encounter the following type of error: Post Upgrade content import was not completed successfully. Note that this error is only for the out-of-the-box content that is provided with BMC Server Automation. You can still continue to use other use cases of BMC Server Automation, if the rest of the upgrade is completed successfully.

Resolving the problem

Perform the following steps:

  1. Open the bsainstallupgrade.log file stored in either of the following locations, depending on which machine you are running the upgrade on:

    Windows%TEMP%
    Linux/tmp
  2. Perform a search, in the bsainstallupgrade.log file, for each of the text strings types displayed in the first row of the table below.

Note: The cause of failure of the content installation, its corresponding steps to resolve, and an example of the log are given below, in the column of the text string type.

Text string type 1Text string type 2Text string type 3

Text string occurring in log file

No such file or directory;Cannot access source file

    Permission denied;Cannot access source file

Connection timed out;Failed to connect to "<file_server_IP_address>": com.bladelogic.om.infra.mfw.util.BlException: Connection timed out;Failed to connect to "<file_server_IP_address>"

    Cause of failure

    Issue with Authentication profile
The authentication profile that is used while running the unified product installer does not connect to the same Application Server that the UPI is launched from, and instead connects to another Application server.

Note: An authentication profile is a collection of information that the system uses to conduct a logon session. When you log on to the BMC Server Automation Console, you must select an authentication profile.

    User permission issue

The bladmin OS user does not have permission to read or write a particular location.

In this example, ‘bladmin’ OS user does not have the permission to read: /88_316/Disk1/files/dashboard/DashboardReport.nsh

    File server agent issue
The file server RSCD agent did not respond during the upgrade.

    Steps to resolve

    1. Move the existing unified product installer files and folders on the Application Server that your authentication profile connects to.
Note: Because the existing files and folders contain your upgrade configurations, ensure that you move the same files and folders from the previous upgrade attempt. You must not download a fresh copy.
    2. Run the unified product installer, once again from the new Application Server.
Note: The unified product installer only imports the content that had failed earlier. It will not re-run the entire upgrade process.
    1. Ensure that your Application Server is able to connect to the location.
    2. Run the unified product installer, once again.
Note: The unified product installer only imports the content that had failed earlier. It will not re-run the entire upgrade process.
    1. Ensure that your Application Server is able to connect to your file server agent.
    2. Run the unified product installer, once again.
Note: The unified product installer only imports the content that had failed earlier. It will not re-run the entire upgrade process.
