Installing the vCenter RSCD Agent on a Proxy Host and enrolling the Proxy Host to BMC Server Automation

This topic consists of the following:

Installing the vCenter RSCD Agent

To install the vCenter RSCD Agent, perform the following steps:

  1. Secure a Windows 2008 64-Bit Server to serve as the BMC Server Automation Proxy Host.

    Note

BMC recommends hosting the Proxy Host on a separate server from your BMC Server Automation server for better performance.

  2. Obtain the matching BMC Server Automation vCenter RSCD Agent Installer that corresponds to your BMC Server Automation Server.
  3. Install the BMC Server Automation vCenter RSCD Agent on the BMC Server Automation Proxy Host.
  4. Edit C:\Windows\rsc\exports file for RSCD Agent to ensure the agent uses administrator rights. For example:
    <host> rw,user=root
where <host> is the host name or IP address of the agent.
  5. Restart the RSCD agent.

Enrolling the Proxy Host to BMC Server Automation

To enroll the Proxy Host to BMC Server Automation using the BMC Server Automation console, perform the following steps:

  1. In the Tree View, right-click on Servers and select New > Server Group to create a new server group. For example, BSA Proxy Host.

  2. To enroll the BSA Proxy Host server group, right-click the group and select Add Server.

  3. In the Add New Server dialog box, enter the hostname for the BSA Proxy Host and click the verify server icon. Fix any errors during enrollment and Click Finish.
The below figure shows the Add New Server dialog box.

  4. From the Configuration menu, select Property Dictionary View.
  5. In the System Object > Built-In Property Classes, search for the Connection PSI.
  6. Navigate to the Connection’s Instances Tab.
The below figure shows the Instances tab.

  7. Click the green plus icon to create a new Connection instance.
In the New Instance dialog box do the following:
    • Enter a Name for your instance.
    • For CONNECTION_USER, enter a vCenter user account.
    • For CONNECTION_PASSWORD, enter the password of the vCenter User.
    • For CONNECTION_URL, enter the URL of the vCenter. For example, http://<VCENTER SERVER>/sdk.

    • Click Finish.
The following figure shows the Connection New Instance dialog box.

  8. In the System Object > Built-In Property Classes, search for Virtualization PSI.

  9. Click the green plus icon to create a new Connection instance.
In the New Instance dialog box:
    • Enter any Name for your instance.
    • For VIRTUAL_ENTITY_TYPE, set the Value to VMware Virtual Center.
    • For VIRTUAL_ENTITY_CONNECTION, set the Value to Connection. This is the same Connection instance you created in Step 7.
    • Click Finish.
The following figures provide examples of two Virtualization Instances:

    Virtualization Instance - I

    Virtualization Instance - II

  10. Search for the enrolled BSA Proxy Host server, right-click and select Set Property to set the Virtualization property for that server.

  11. Set the Virtualization Property for your BSA Proxy Host to the Virtualization PSI created during Step 9 and click OK.
The following figure shows the Set Server Property dialog box.

  12. Right-click the BSA Proxy Host server and select Distribute Configuration Objects to distribute the configuration objects.

  13. Double-click the BSA Proxy Host to view the VMware vCenter Server.
If there are any errors at this stage, you might want to reconfigure using a fully qualified network name for the vCenter host.
