Folders view and resource management

The BMC Server Automation Folders view is a general purpose view that provides access to all BMC Server Automation resources. For additional procedures you can perform using the Folders view, see:

The Folders view contains the following folders:

Folder name

Description

Components

Use the Components folder as a central location for managing components. Using the Components folder, you can organize components, run Snapshot, Audit, and Compliance Jobs on components, and change the properties and permissions of a component. For a complete description of the Components folder, see Working with components and component templates.

Component templates

Use the Component Templates folder to hold all component templates that your role is authorized to see. Using this folder, you can create and edit component templates and components, run Snapshot, Audit, and Component Discovery Jobs, and change the properties and permissions of a component template. For a complete description of the Component Templates folder, see Working with components and component templates.

Depot

Use the Depot folder to store objects that are needed to execute jobs. The Depot folder is commonly referred to as the Depot. You can use the Depot to store the following types of objects. For procedures explaining how to create depot objects (except system packages) and how to set up and manage the Depot, see Depot object overview. For information about system packages, see Creating a system package.

  • Files
  • BLPackages
  • Network Shell scripts
  • Software packages
  • System packages

Devices

Use the Devices folder to view discovered servers (servers that have booted but are not yet provisioned), prediscovered servers (servers that have not yet booted but are added to the system), and provisioned servers. The Devices folder also lets you create and run Provision Jobs on servers. For more information, see Monitoring the provisioning status of devices and Creating a Provision Job.

Jobs

Use the Jobs folder to create, modify, and execute jobs and view job results. For a list of available jobs and procedures explaining how to set up and manage the Jobs folder, see Managing jobs.

RBAC Manager

Use the RBAC Manager folder to define roles that correspond to organizational entities, such as QA engineers or web administrators, and then assign authorizations to the roles. After you define roles, you can assign users to those roles, and the users are granted the authorizations assigned to their current roles. The RBAC Manager folder also provides other tools for managing authorizations. For a complete description of the RBAC Manager folder, see Managing access.

Search

Use Search to scan and retrieve information about objects in the BMC Server Automation environment. You specify search criteria to construct queries that search all objects in the BMC Server Automation database. Search results appear in a Search view and can be saved to a smart group (see Defining a smart group). For more information about Search, see Searching for objects.

Servers

Use the Servers folder to show the servers to which your role has access. You can browse each server to examine its contents, and you can perform many types of actions on a server. The Servers folder also provides some capabilities for managing server objects, such as editing text files and starting and stopping Windows services. For a complete description of the Servers folder, see Servers folder overview.
