Patch management enhancements

BMC Server Automation version 8.3 includes the following enhancements in patch management:

New platform support for patch management

BMC Server Automation version 8.3 adds patching support for the following operating systems:

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) 6
    • For Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) 6 support, the Oracle Enterprise Linux Catalog tab within Patch Catalog now includes the following new filters:
      • Oracle Linux x86
      • Oracle Linux x86_64
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012
    • For Microsoft Windows Server 2012 support, the Windows Catalog tab within Patch Catalog now includes the new Microsoft Windows Server 2012 filter.
  • Microsoft Windows 8
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012

Support for viewing installed hotfixes and bulletins

BMC Server Automation version 8.3 adds support for viewing installed and effectively installed hotfixes and bulletins during Patch Analysis.
Now, you can view information about the installed and effectively-installed hotfixes and bulletins in addition to information about the missing ones.

To view information about the installed hotfixes and bulletins, perform the following steps:

  1. Run patch analysis.
  2. Right-click the Analysis Run tab.
The Installed Hotfix Count and Installed Bulletin Count rows are displayed, in addition to the existing rows.
  3. Click the Object View tab.
The items for which the Missing Machine Count column displays the 0 value correspond to the installed hotfixes and bulletins, for all successful targets.
The items for which the Installed Machine Count column displays the n value correspond to the installed hotfixes and bulletins, where n corresponds to all successful targets.
  4. Click the Server View tab, and then click the Successful Targets tab.
The Installed Hotfix Count and Installed Bulletin Count columns display the count of the installed hotfixes and bulletins for that server, respectively.

Note

(For Windows only) In versions prior to BMC Server Automation 8.3, the number of Installed Hotfixes for a patch analysis job is calculated for all patches without considering the patch catalog. In BMC Server Automation 8.3 and later versions, the number of Installed Hotfixes is calculated by only considering the patches in the patch catalog. As a result, the number of Installed Hotfixes displayed for the same target might vary depending on which version of BMC Server Automation the analysis job is run on.

Patch management enhancements implemented in 8.2 Service Packs

BMC Server Automation version 8.3 also includes all enhancements that were implemented in service packs released since the previous version 8.2. For more information, see the following BMC Server Automation 8.2 pages:
