Downloading the installation files
This topic explains how to obtain the files you need for installation.
Files to download
The following table lists the installation files to download according to the instructions in To download the files.
For details about the installation programs required for each platform, see Installation programs for BMC Server Automation.
Note
Installation files use the following naming convention: <component><version>-<platform>.<fileType> (for example BSA83-SOL10-SPARC.sh). For service packs and patches, the <version> also includes the service pack or patch number (for example, BBSACONSOLE83-SP1-P1-WIN64.exe).

Optional files | The following items are available for download but are not required for BMC Server Automation:

To download the files
Note
The product files that you download from the BMC Software Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website might contain some or all of the patches listed on a product's Customer Support web page. If the EPD page shows that a patch is included in a file you downloaded, you do not need to obtain that patch separately.
To download files:
Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.
Note
On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.
At the login prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose, and select the Licensed Products tab.
Depending on your product license, expand the relevant BMC BladeLogic Server Automation Suite or Module node to show the listed versions.
- Expand the relevant version node:
- For the base version, expand the 8.3.00 node.
- For a service pack, expand the relevant 8.3.0x version node.
Under the suite node, expand the BMC Server Automation node for the selected version.
Expand the entry for the relevant platform and language to show its downloadable files.
Select the files you want to download. See Installation programs for BMC Server Automation.
Click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an e-mail message.
Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively, and to resume an interrupted download if the connection drops. This method requires a one-time installation of the AkamiNetSession Client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum is used to verify file integrity automatically.
Obtaining the installation files for BMC Server Automation UCS Manager
If you have licensed BMC Server Automation UCS Manager, complete the following steps to obtain the installation files:
- Access the BMC EPD website as described in steps 1 - 5 in To download the files.
- Expand the applicable BMC BladeLogic Configuration Module for Cisco UCS entry to display the available versions, then expand the entry for your desired platform and language to show its downloadable files.
- Select the files you want to download. Installation files for BMC Server Automation UCS Manager are preceded by BSA for Cisco UCS Server 8.3. See Files to download for a list of the available files.
- Click Download (FTP) or Download Manager to download the files.
About the external-files.zip file
A file named <currentRelease>-external-files.zip provides the scripts you need to set up the database schema before installing BMC Server Automation and to upgrade data to the current release. The file is a compressed archive in the Windows standard ZIP format. It is included when you download BMC Server Automation from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website. BMC Server Automation documentation refers to this file as external-files.zip.
Extracting the contents of external-files.zip creates a large directory structure, with the parent directory named bl_<currentRelease>, for example,bl_8.3.0.
The following figure shows the portion of the directory structure that applies to a data upgrade.
Where to go from here
Carefully review the system requirements for your platform before performing the installation or upgrade. For more information and instructions, see the following topics:
- If you are applying a service pack, review upgrade instructions in the page for the service pack, under Service packs and patches.
- For additional upgrade information, see the Upgrading section.
- For detailed installation instructions, see Performing the installation.
