Patching enhancements in version 8.2 over version 7.6

The following table summarizes the important differences between patching in version 7.6 and in version 8.2. For details about the enhancements in version 8.2, see Version 8.2.00.

Feature

Support in version 7.6

Support in version 8.2

Supported target platforms

AIX supported using core patching. Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE, AIX and HP-UX supported using the VPC toolkit.

AIX, Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE and AIX supported using core patching. HP-UX supported using the VPC toolkit.

Supported target platforms

Microsoft Windows supported using core patching. Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE, AIX and HP-UX supported using the VPC toolkit.

Windows, Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE and AIX supported using core patching. HP-UX supported using the VPC toolkit.

Downloaders

Downloaders supported using JAVA code for all the above platforms.

Downloaders for all platforms that are part of core patching, that is, Windows, Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE and AIX are supported using PSU. The HP-UX downloader is the same as in version 7.6.

Patch Catalogs

No support for patch catalogs.

Patch catalogs added for Windows, Solaris, RedHat, OEL, SuSE and AIX. The catalog allows you to browse patch metadata. It helps you limit the set of patches to be scanned and deployed. It lets you create smaller dynamic groups as inputs if required.

Patch Catalog smart groups

No support for smart groups within patch catalogs

Ability to smart group patches based on smart group-able attributes. Out-of-the-box smart group content allows you to use these smart groups as soon as a catalog is updated. You can also add custom properties to create user-defined smart groups.

Patching Job support

No support for Patching Jobs. Analysis achieved using NSH script (type 4 – PERL-based) jobs.

Patching Jobs allow you to analyze and optionally create remediation artifacts that can be used later for deploying patches. This container-job workflow eliminates the need to create various jobs manually.

Remediation Job support

Not available in 7.6

Remediation Jobs allow you to download patch payloads if needed, and create remediation artifacts such as BlPackages and suitable Batch or Deploy Jobs. You can use the artifacts immediately after creation or later to remediate targets.

Scalability

Limited support since an NSH script job has been used to implement analysis.

Can scale up to several thousand servers on various platforms.
