Server organization concepts

Using the Servers folder, you can organize servers into groups.

BMC Server Automation lets you perform many actions on server groups, so a well-designed server structure can enhance productivity. You can group servers using a combination of the following approaches:

• Smart server groups
  Using smart server groups, you can organize servers dynamically by defining a set of conditions for membership in a group. Any server with properties meeting those conditions is automatically added to the group. When you provision a new server, it can be automatically added to smart server groups. For example, you can create a group for servers running Windows 2003. Servers with that version of the Windows operating system are automatically added to the smart group.
• Server groups
  Using server groups, you can organize servers hierarchically. Often, system administrators organize groups by geographical location or operating system. For example, you might create a server group for the eastern and western divisions of your company, and within those server groups create another level of the hierarchy for Windows, Linux, and AIX platforms. After you define a server hierarchy, you populate it by assigning servers to groups.
  In addition to creating server groups and smart server groups, you can organize servers using any of the following procedures:
• Cutting and pasting server groups.
• Copying, cutting, and pasting smart server groups.
• Copying, cutting, and pasting servers from one server group to another.
• Deleting server groups, smart server groups, and servers.
