Setting parameters alarms

This section describes how to set a parameter alarm using the PATROL Developer Console for Windows and UNIX.

Parameter alarm properties

The following table describes the alarm properties of a parameter.

Range Limits: Autoscale	Disabled	For graph, gauge, and stoplight display styles only. Click Auto Scale to scale the graph using actual minimum and maximum parameter values rather than the range limit values set in this property dialog box.
Range Limits: Max/Min	Min 0; Max 100	Specify the minimum and maximum values that bracket the entire spectrum of possible parameter values. The Range Limit that you define controls the maximum and minimum values possible for the Alarm1, Alarm2, and Border options.
Border Enable: Max/Min	Min 0; Max 100	Click Enable to enable the border range. Specify the minimum and maximum values that bracket the border range. If it is possible for a parameter to have extreme values that lie near the ends of the range limits, use the Border option to define the range of values that a parameter might have under abnormal conditions. If you enable the border range, you can specify a border action and other properties on the Border Actions tab.
Alarm1 Enable: Max/Min	Enabled	Click Enable to enable the Alarm1 range. Use the Alarm1 range to specify parameter values indicative of either a warning or an alarm state. Alarm1 range values Must be less that Alarm2 range values Cannot fall outside the range limits or border range Can share a common end-point value with another range for "continuous coverage"

If you enable the Alarm1 range, you can specify a recovery action and other properties on the Alarm1 Actions tab.

Alarm2 Enable: Max/Min

Enabled

Click Enable to enable the Alarm2 range. Use the Alarm1 range to specify parameter values indicative of either a warning or an alarm state. Alarm2 range values

Must be greater that Alarm1 range values
Cannot fall outside the range limits or border range
Can share a common end-point value with another range for "continuous coverage"

If you enable the Alarm2 range, you can specify a recovery action and other properties on the Alarm2 Actions tab|

Setting parameter alarms on Windows

In this task, you will set alarm ranges for a parameter.

To set parameter alarms on Windows

Click the Alarm Ranges tab on the Parameter Properties dialog box for the appropriate parameter as shown in the following figure.

Choose the appropriate options that appear on the Alarm Ranges tab. Parameter alarm properties summarizes the available options. When the Border, Alarm1, or Alarm2 ranges are enabled, an action tab is created for the range on the Parameters Properties dialog box.
Click Apply to save the changes to the PATROL KM.

Setting parameter alarms on UNIX

In this task, you will set alarm ranges for a parameter.

To set up parameter alarms on UNIX

Choose Edit > Modify from the appropriate List of Parameters window menu bar to change the selected parameter.
A Parameter Definition dialog box appears, similar to the one shown in Parameter Definition dialog box, General. The Alarm Ranges button appears as in the following figure.

Click the Alarm Ranges button to access the List of Ranges window for the selected parameter.
The List of Ranges window appears as shown in the following figure.

The List Of Ranges window has three entries that are described in Parameter alarm properties,
Choose Options > Range Limits from the List Of Ranges window Options menu to edit the alert scale values. The Alert Scale Values dialog box appears as shown in the following figure.

Set unit scaling by one of the following methods:
- Dynamically - To scale the parameter display using the parameter's actual maximum and minimum values, click the Automatically Scale Output check box.
- Statically - To set scale directly, type values in the Minimum and Maximum entry fields that bracket the entire spectrum of possible parameter values. The range limits that you define controls the maximum and minimum values possible for the Border, Alarm1, and Alarm2 dialog box. For further information on the values you enter, see Parameter alarm properties.
Click OK to apply the changes and return to the List of Ranges window. If it is possible for a parameter to have extreme values that lie near the range limits, use the Border option to define the range of values that a parameter might have under abnormal conditions.
If you enable the border range, you can assign a state to the range, set an alarm, and set up border recovery actions on the Border dialog box.

To define the border alarm

Double-click the Border item in the List of Ranges window. Alternatively, select the Border item and choose Edit > Modify from the menu bar.
The Border Of dialog box appears as shown in the following figure.

Choose or modify the appropriate options that appear on the Border dialog box. Parameter alarm properties summarizes the available options.
Click OK to apply the changes and return to the List of Ranges window.

To define Alarm1 or Alarm2

Double-click the appropriate option, either Alarm1 or Alarm2, in the List of Ranges window, and select Edit => Modify from the List of Ranges window menu bar.
The alarm definition dialog box is displayed as shown in the following figure.
Note

Often, it is often helpful to display the definition windows for Alarm1 and Alarm2 simultaneously.

Click OK to apply the changes and return to the List of Ranges window.
