9.6.20: Service Pack 4

This topic contains information about fixes and updates in this service pack. It also explains how to obtain the installation and other files that you need to install PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server.

What's new

Full monitoring coverage of SQL Server 2016 perfmon catalogs

PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server now supports monitoring of SQL Server 2016 external scripts performance monitor (perfmon) catalogs.

Enhanced Custom SQL query feature to annotate returned records

Enhanced Custom SQL query annotates returned records when the Number of Records has a value greater than zero.

What's changed

Database Status parameters are part of the Availability parameters list

The parameters listed below are now part of the Availability parameters and the Monitor availability only option includes:

Additionally, monitoring of Database Status includes the configuration of Database filtering options.

Example

You configure the database filter to include only database production_1 for monitoring and you select Monitor availability only.

In this example, data is available for all the Availability parameters list. Only database production_1 is discovered and its Database Status parameter has a value.

Higher rate monitoring using Custom SQL Query

Custom SQL Query feature now supports a minimum collection interval of one minute. In earlier versions, the minimum was two minutes.

Higher maximum value for all time-based parameters

All time-based parameters have a new maximum limit of 10080 minutes (one week). In earlier versions, the minimum was 120 minutes.

Enhanced custom SQL query value

custom SQL query value is now enhanced to show data even when it returns more than one row, column or both as long as the data in the first row or column is numeric. In earlier versions when a query returned more than one row, column or both the parameter did not show the data.

Improved accuracy of SQL Agent Job Failures

The following are the methods to improve the accuracy of parameters:

  1. If a job failed a few times during the last collection interval, it is considered as a single failure. This parameter counts the number of job failures, not the number of run failures.
  2. If a step fails but the job succeeds, it is not considered a job failure. The entire job is a success even if one or more steps have failed.

  3. If a job fails, the job annotates the last failed step.

  4. Parameters do not detect SQL Agent Hung Jobs and SQL Agent Job Failures if the job is owned by a user who does not have a login account.

Hi, Is the use of host list supported in this version, or is a patch which can support available? In configuring 9.6.20 I yet see the Attribute description for input as "Host name/IP address". In my BPPM 9.6 environment I believe I would need replicate for approx. 600 server entries. Hosts lists of course making the process manageable. Thanks.

      Hello Adam,

Latest PATROL for Microsoft SQL Server v9.6.20 not supports this feature. We have open RFE to address it and will consider it for next release. No estimation date for now.

Important Note: As you can see in https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/mssqlserver96/Configuration+for+large+systems, configuration of 600 hosts in single environment as far above the best practice recommendation which talked about ~5 hosts. Please consider it when coming to configure an Environment. To address such high scale requirement, the recommendation is to split hosts between environments and if needed even split environments between PATROL Agents.

      Thanks, Liron
