PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager provides you with the ability to monitor your environment and resources, allowing you to determine how to best utilize those resources as effectively as possible.

PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager offers the following features to monitor your resources:

Automatically discover the hosts, clusters, virtual machines in your enterprise

After you create a connection, PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager automatically discovers the following:

  • Groups
  • Clusters
  • Hosts
  • Virtual machines (VMs)

Manage availability and performance thresholds

Using PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager, you can manage availability and performance data for clusters, hosts and virtual machines, measuring how virtual resources affect your physical resources. The types of performance data that you can measure include the following:

  • The allocation of resources - what CPU or memory resources have been assigned to a group, host or a virtual machine
  • The amount of resources used - how the assigned resources have been used by the group, cluster, host or virtual machine

Access inventory and performance reports

In PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager, you can access several reports that enable you to inventory and assess the performance of the hosts and virtual machines contained in your environment. The following reports are available in PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager:

  1. Top Hosts report - The Top Hosts report lists the following information for a cluster:
    1. The hosts that are consuming the largest amount of CPU resources 

    2. The hosts that are consuming the largest amount of memory resources 

  2. Top virtual machines - The Top Hosts report lists the virtual machines that are connected to the hosts.

Filter entity for monitoring

You can filter entities to include or exclude groups, clusters, hosts, and virtual machines from monitoring.

Configure through BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration (CMA)

PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager version 1.0.00 is BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration (CMA) enabled. The Virtual Machine Manager monitor type can be configured through CMA.

Downloading the product

This section provides the information that you need to download and install the product from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website.

To download the installation utility and product from the EPD website
  1. Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.

  2. Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
  3. At the logon prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
  4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
  5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
  6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose.
  7. You can download the installation utility and the product patch using either of the following methods:
Using Component View 
  1. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  2. Click Go.
  3. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
  4. In the Version: list, select 9.6.01, and click Go.
  5. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  6. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
    • Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an email message.
    • Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively and to resume an interrupted download.
      This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
  7. Click  to close the window.
  8. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
  9. Click Go.
  10. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager.
  11. In the Version: list, select 1.0.00, and click Go.
  12. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

  13. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:

  14. Complete the installation procedure described in the Installing the product the section.
Using Licensed Products View 
    1. Click Go To Licensed Products View.
    2. Locate BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Suite and expand its entries to show the available version numbers.
    3. Expand BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Suite 9.6.00 to show the available components.
    4. Expand BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.6.01 and BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Suite (Monitoring, Analytics, Diagnostics, Event and Impact) 9.6.00 to show the available components.
    5. Expand BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 1.0.00 to show the available files.
    6. Select the check box next to the files as appropriate,

Installing the product 

Before you begin

You must install the product on the following computers:

  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Agent
  • Hosts that are running the PATROL Console

Before you install the product, complete the following steps:

  1. Stop the PATROL Agent.
  2. Back up the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  3. Delete all BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager files from the PATROL_CACHE directory.
  4. Back up the PATROL_HOME/lib/knowledge and PATROL_HOME/lib/psl directories.
To install the BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 1.0.00
    1. Extract the installation utility for your operating system as appropriate:

      • For Windows, double-click ins_WINDOWS_9600.zip.
      • For UNIX, enter tar -xvf ins_ALL_9600.tar.

        The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory.
    2. Extract the service pack files for your operating system as appropriate:
      • For Windows, double-click scv_ALL_1000.zip.
      • For UNIX, enter tar -xvf scv_ALL_1000.tar.

        The contents of the files are extracted into the bmc_products subdirectory. 
    3. From the bmc_products directory, run the installation utility as appropriate for your operating system:

      • For Windows, double-click setup.exe.

      • For UNIX, run setup.sh.

    4. Follow the on-screen instructions until the Select Products and Components to Install page is displayed. 

    5. On the Select Products and Components to Install page, select BMC PATROL for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 1.0.00.

    6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

      After you complete the installation steps, you can delete the temporary directory and its contents.
