Effects of disabling device adapters

You can disable an adapter, as explained in Viewing the device adapter listing. Disabling an adapter makes it unavailable to users. Disabled adapters do not appear in user selection controls in the user interface. You may choose to disable vendors and device types for the equipment you do not own, to reduce the size of frequently presented menus. You might choose to disable custom actions that are not appropriate to your site, to prevent users from running them.

The following table explains the details of disabling various types of adapters:

Vendor

  • When you successfully disable a vendor, a User event is generated that contains the name of the adapter being disabled.
  • If the following tasks are running in the background when you disable a vendor, and if they process records with reference to the disabled vendor, the tasks complete successfully:
    • Device Import
    • Configuration Import
    • Configuration Export
    • Rule Import
    • Rule Export
  • If the tasks listed above are run after disabling a vendor, these tasks display an error on processing a record with reference to a disabled vendor.
  • After you disable a vendor, user selection controls in the GUI do not display the disabled vendor except for Rule Filter, OsImage Filter, and Template Filter drop-down lists.

Device Type

  • When you successfully disable a device type, a User event is generated that contains the name of the adapter being disabled.
  • If the following tasks are running in the background when you disable a device type, and if they process records with reference to the disabled device type, the tasks complete successfully:
    • Device Import
    • Configuration Import
    • Configuration Export
    • Rule Import
    • Rule Export
  • If the tasks listed above are run after disabling a device type, these tasks display an error on processing a record with reference to a disabled device type.
  • After you disable a device type, user selection controls in the GUI do not display the disabled device type except for Rule Filter, OsImage Filter, and Template Filter drop-down lists.

Custom Action

  • When you successfully disable a custom action, a User event is generated that contains the name of the adapter being disabled.
  • The user does not see the disabled custom actions in the actions menu.
  • You can disable a custom action that has reference to a job, predefined job, or policy. You can view the corresponding details of a job that has already run, or existing predefined job or policy. However, you cannot edit and save such job, predefined job or policy with reference to the disabled custom action. (You can edit and save the these entities by removing references to disabled custom actions.)
  • Jobs with reference to a disabled custom action that are scheduled in the future fail with an Invalid action GUID error.
  • You cannot prepare a predefined job with reference to a disabled custom action. However you can edit the predefined job, remove the disabled custom action, and save the job to perform a Prepare job.
  • The action status for a disabled custom action is not displayed in the device status details in Network > Devices.

Configuration Trail

  • When you successfully disable a configuration trail, a User event is generated that contains the name of the adapter being disabled.
  • Disabled configuration trails does not show up in user selection controls.
  • You cannot perform Snapshot, Deploy to Stored, or Deploy to Active operations on a disabled trail.
  • You can disable configuration trails with references to Policy keyword, Rules, and Configuration Profiled Dynamic fields. However, you cannot edit and save such objects with reference to disabled trails. (You can pick a different enabled trail to edit and save Rule, Policy keyword, or Configuration profiled dynamic fields that have reference to a disabled configuration trail.
  • Disabling a trail blows away the configuration instances for devices associated with the trail.
  • Disabling a trail clears any violation that is present on the trail.

External Script Action

  • When you successfully disable an external script action, a User event is generated that contains the name of the adapter being disabled.
  • You cannot see disabled external script actions in the actions menu.
  • You can disable an external script action that has reference to job, predefined job, or policy.You can view the corresponding details of a job that has already run, or existing pre-defined job or policy. However, you cannot edit and save such job, pre-defined job, or policy with reference to a disabled external script action. (You can edit and save the entities by removing references to disabled external actions).
  • Jobs with reference to a disabled external script action that are scheduled in the future fail with an Invalid action GUID error.
  • You cannot prepare a predefined job with reference to a disabled external script action.
