Using Trial Candidates for Compression

Option (Trial candidates for compression) enables you to generate Trial utility JCL for the DATA ACCELERATOR Compression product.

Using the candidate list generated by option 1, select the data sets that you want to process by using the Trial utility. Implementation Assist generates a registration list to be used as input for option 3 (Register candidates). This list contains compression statistics for the selected data sets. These statistics help you determine which compression techniques provide optimum compression for your data sets.

This task is optional.

To use the Trial Candidates for Compression option:

  1. In the Implementation Assist Primary Menu enter 2 (Trial candidates for compression) in the option select space. The panel displays the Candidate List panel.
  2. Type Y or N , to indicate whether you want to rebuild the list by using different values.
  3. Press Enter. You can use the entire candidate list generated with option 1, or you can select a subset of the list by rebuilding the list. For example, you might select a specific volume or data set that begins with a particular high-level qualifier.

    Warning

    Note

The candidate list is refreshed automatically only when you collect additional SMF and VTOC data using option 1. To ensure that you are using the entire list and not a previously generated subset of the list, select Y to rebuild the candidate list. If you want to continue using a previously generated subset of the list, select N.

If you select Y, the panel displays the Candidate List Refresh panel. Continue to step 4.

If you select N, the panel displays the Trial Utility Options panel. Continue to step 6.

  4. Verify or type values in the fields of the Candidate List Refresh panel to identify the subset of the candidate list that you want to work with.
  5. Press Enter. The panel displays the Trial Utility Options panel.
  6. Type or verify values in the fields of the Trial Utility Options panel.
  7. Press Enter. The panel displays the Candidate List panel.
  8. Use primary commands or line commands to select data sets to be included in the trial.

    Warning

    Note

You can use a single asterisk as a generic search argument to represent one level or to represent zero, one, multiple characters. The following are valid example:

    • AAA - include data sets that begin with AAA
    • AAA.BBB - include the data set AAA.BBB only
    • AAA.B* - include data sets that begin with AAA.B
    • AAA.*.CCC - include data sets that begin with AAA, followed by one level, and end with CCC
    • AAA.*.CCC* - include data sets that begin with AAA, followed by one level, and end with a string that begins with CCC

When you have completed your selections for the trial, press F3 to enter an ISPF Edit Review and submit the JCL.

This job must complete successfully with a condition code of 0 before you can continue to the next option on the Implementation Assist Primary Menu. If the job does not complete successfully, review any changes you may have made to the JCL, correct any problems, and submit the JCL again.

The Trial utility reports are placed in the output queue.

  9. Press F3 to exit the ISPF Edit session and to return to the Implementation Assist Primary Menu.
