Configuring general BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0 settings

You can access the general settings for BMC Remedyforce Configuration Management Database (CMDB) 2.0 from the Remedyforce Administration > Configure CMDB 2.0 > General CMDB Settings page.

The following table describes the configuration settings that are available on the General CMDB Settings page. If you are upgrading from BMC Remedyforce 20.15.02 (Spring 15) or earlier, also see Upgrade considerations.

Configuration settingDescription
Enable IT Asset Management

Select this check box to enable asset management in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0. After enabling asset management, you must perform a few additional actions. For more information, see Enabling asset management.

When asset management is enabled, out-of-the-box asset classes are displayed in BMC Remedyforce CMDB. On the Remedyforce CMDB tab, users can view, create, update, and delete instances of the out-of-the-box and custom asset classes based on their access level. In addition, system administrators can perform the following actions:

Clear this check box if you do not want to manage assets in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0. However, either asset management or CI management must be enabled in your organization.

Enable Configuration Item (CI) Management

Select this check box to enable configuration item (CI) management in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0. After enabling CI management, you must perform a few additional actions. For more information, see Enabling CI management.

CI management is enabled by default. Clear this check box if you do not want to manage CIs in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0. However, either asset management or CI management must be enabled in your organization.

Enable Models

Select this check box to enable the creation of models.

Best practice

After enabling models, we recommend that you perform a few additional actions. For more information, see Enabling models.
Note: In a new installation of version 20.15.03 (Summer 15) or later, the creation of models is enabled by default. This check box is available only if you are upgrading from BMC Remedyforce 20.15.02 (Spring 15) or earlier to version 20.15.03 (Summer 15) or later.

Model Generation

To generate models based on unique values in the Model attribute (data type: Text) in existing CIs and assets, click Generate Model Records.

The model generation process checks the Model attribute values in CIs and assets that were created or updated after the last successful run of this process. Models are generated only for Model attribute values that do not match the Model Name field values in existing model records.

The Model Name, Manufacturer, and CMDB Class fields are populated in the generated models based on values in the corresponding CIs and assets. In addition, the generated models are automatically linked to the corresponding CIs or assets, but only if the Model Name attribute (date type: Lookup) in these instances is not already populated. For information about updating the generated models, see Managing models.

Notes:

  • If the model name and CMDB class in multiple CIs or assets is the same but the manufacturer is different, any one manufacturer is populated in the generated model.
  • If the model name in multiple CIs or assets is the same but the CMDB class is different, the model is generated for any one CMDB class. In this case, the generated model is automatically linked to only those CIs or assets that belong to the class for which the model was generated. For the other CIs and assets, you must manually create another model with a different name and apply it to the CIs and assets.
  • The Generate Model Records button is dimmed until the process of generating models has been completed.
Schedule Normalization Rules

Specify the interval at which the normalization rules must be processed and click Start Normalization Process.

To view the errors that are generated during the normalization process, click View Scheduler Exceptions. A maximum of 100 exceptions is displayed.

For more information, see Scheduling and running the normalization process.

Configure Asset BirthdateSelect the Asset Status values based on which the Asset Birthdate value is automatically set. The Asset Status values that you select are considered only if users do not manually populate the Asset Birthdate attribute of an asset.

By default, the Received, Discovered, and Deployed values are selected.

Note: The Asset Birthdate attribute is used to automatically calculate the value of the Asset Age attribute. The age of an asset is the difference between the asset birthdate and the current date. The Asset Age attribute is used to generate the Hardware Asset Age By Class report.

Upgrade considerations

If you are upgrading from BMC Remedyforce 20.15.02 (Spring 15) or earlier to version 20.15.03 (Summer 15) or later, consider the following points:

  • The Enable IT Asset Management check box is not selected by default. After upgrade, when you enable IT asset management, you can choose to activate all out-of-the-box Rule Based Asset classes and synchronize existing CIs in BMC Remedyforce CMDB.
If you do not activate classes at this stage, you have to manually activate each out-of-the-box Rule Based Asset class. For more information, see Managing asset classes.
  • After upgrade, the class type of the BMC_BusinessService, BMC_Monitor, BMC_Mainframe, and BMC_Printer is automatically updated from CI to CI and Asset.
