Group servers by business service

A business manager might find it useful to look at all the servers associated with a particular business service. This scenario describes how a business manager can create a smart group that includes all the servers associated with a particular business service. As an example, this page uses Human Resources as a business service.

Before you begin

Make sure you have populated the BUSINESS_SERVICES property for all your servers, as described in Populating the BUSINESS_SERVICES property.

To create a server smart group based on the BUSINESS_SERVICES property

1. Within the BMC Server Automation Console, right-click the Servers folder and select New > Server Smart Group.

2. For Name, specify "Human Resources." For Description, specify "Servers associated with the Human Resources business service."

3. For Match, specify:

Match any of the following conditions:

4. In the next line, specify that BUSINESS_SERVICES must be set to Human Resources:

Any Server where BUSINESS_SERVICES equals Human Resources

5.Complete the remaining panels (Permissions and ACL settings) as described in Defining permissions for a system object in the BMC Server Automation documentation.

6. Expand the newly created Human Resources smart group to browse all servers associated with the Human Resources business service.

Where to go from here

Now that you have created a group the contains all the servers associated with the Human Resources business service, you can report on change and compliance activity within Human Resources. See Scenario - report on compliance and change activity by business service.
